7-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary: The Perfect Northern Circuit

The 7-day Tanzania safari is the most popular itinerary format for first-time visitors to the Tanzania northern circuit and for good reason: it is long enough to cover the major wildlife destinations with meaningful time at each, short enough to be feasible for travelers with limited annual leave, and compact enough to be planned and executed efficiently. Done well, a 7-day Tanzania safari covering Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti delivers an experience of extraordinary depth and variety that leaves most visitors wanting more time, not less. This detailed itinerary guide takes you through the best 7-day Tanzania safari day by day, with specific recommendations for timing, routing, wildlife expectations, and accommodation choices at different budget levels.

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

Most international flights to Tanzania arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), located approximately 50 kilometres from Arusha between the towns of Moshi and Arusha. The airport is small and efficient, and clearance through immigration and customs typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. Your safari operator’s representative will meet you at the arrivals hall with a name board and transport you to your Arusha accommodation.

Day 1 in Arusha is primarily an acclimatization day. Arusha sits at approximately 1,400 metres altitude with a pleasant climate, and the town itself has several interesting things to see including the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre (crafts and Tanzanian art), the Arusha National Park (worth a morning visit for walking with giraffe and black-and-white colobus monkeys), and some excellent restaurants. Your pre-departure briefing with your guide or operator representative typically happens in Arusha: use this meeting to confirm the itinerary details, discuss your specific wildlife priorities (tell them if lion, cheetah, leopard, or rhino is a particular goal), and clarify any logistics questions. Get an early night: Day 2 begins early.

Day 2: Drive to Tarangire National Park

Depart Arusha early (6:00am to 7:00am) for Tarangire National Park, approximately 120 kilometres south of Arusha on the main road toward Dodoma. The drive takes approximately 2 hours including the short section of tarmac deteriorating to good dirt road toward the park entrance. Enter Tarangire via the main Kucharo Gate in the north of the park and spend the full day exploring the northern section’s excellent wildlife areas.

Tarangire in the dry season (June to October) concentrates its extraordinary elephant population along the Tarangire River, and the northern sections of the river corridor are accessible within a short drive of the main gate. The combination of elephant herds at the river, the ancient baobab trees that define Tarangire’s visual identity, and the diverse bird life of the riverine and acacia woodland habitats make a full day in Tarangire one of the finest single-day wildlife experiences available in Tanzania. Overnight at a camp or lodge inside or adjacent to the park in the northern section.

Day 3: Full Day in Tarangire

A second full day in Tarangire allows exploration of areas beyond the initial game drive circuit of Day 2. Consider driving south toward the Silale Swamps in the central park or exploring the woodland areas toward the western boundary where greater kudu, lesser kudu, and the near-endemic Fringe-eared oryx are found. The early morning Tarangire River game drive, beginning at the park gate as soon as it opens (6:00am to 6:30am depending on the season), is the most reliably productive for elephant and the best light of the day for photography. Afternoon drives in the woodland areas away from the river produce the best kudu, oryx, and dry-country species encounters. Overnight again in Tarangire.

Day 4: Drive to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Depart Tarangire in the morning and drive north toward Manyara and then west to Ngorongoro. Most 7-day itineraries include a stop at Lake Manyara National Park for a half-day game drive en route to Ngorongoro: the two parks are only 1 to 1.5 hours apart and the Lake Manyara visit adds the tree-climbing lions and flamingo viewing without significantly extending the driving day. Enter Manyara through the main gate and drive south toward the lake shore and groundwater forest area for 3 to 4 hours before continuing to Ngorongoro. Arrive at the crater rim in the late afternoon in time for your first sunset view into the caldera. Overnight at a crater rim lodge with a view into the crater.

Day 5: Full Day Inside the Ngorongoro Crater

This is the day for which Ngorongoro visitors fly across the world. Begin the crater descent at the earliest permitted time (typically 6:00am to 7:00am depending on the gate) and spend the full day on the crater floor. The first priority is the morning rhino search in the southeastern grassland and Lerai Forest area: instruct your guide specifically that rhino is a high priority and allocate the first 2 hours of the drive to the rhino zone. After the rhino search, work through the crater’s key areas: the Mandusi Swamp for hippo and waterfowl, the central grassland for the resident lion prides, the Ngoitokitok Springs area for the midday picnic and hippo pool, and the Lerai Forest in the afternoon for leopard and the forest bird community. Exit the crater before the 6:00pm deadline. Overnight on the crater rim.

Day 6: Drive to the Serengeti

Depart from the Ngorongoro rim early morning and drive west across the Conservation Area to the Naabi Hill Gate, the entrance to Serengeti National Park. This drive of approximately 2 to 3 hours includes some of the most spectacular scenery in Tanzania: the descent from the crater highlands, the short grass plains dotted with kopjes, and the first Serengeti plains visibility as you approach the park gate. Enter the Serengeti through Naabi Hill Gate and drive toward your camp, stopping for game drives along the way. Most central Serengeti camps (Seronera area) are 1 to 1.5 hours from Naabi Hill Gate. The afternoon game drive in the central Serengeti is your first Serengeti wildlife drive: a productive afternoon in the Seronera River valley can produce leopard, lion, cheetah, and all the major plains game species in a few hours. Overnight in the central Serengeti.

Day 7: Full Day in the Serengeti and Departure

Your final full day is spent in the central Serengeti. Begin with the dawn drive at 6:00am, covering the Seronera River valley for leopard and the surrounding grassland for cheetah, lion, and plains game. If your international flight departs in the evening from Kilimanjaro Airport, you can be in the Serengeti until early afternoon before a charter flight to Kilimanjaro (45 minutes) connects you to your departure. If your flight departs the following day, spend the full last day in the Serengeti and overnight in Arusha before departure. The balloon safari over the Serengeti is an excellent morning activity on Day 7 if it has been booked in advance: the flight ends by 9:00am and allows the rest of the morning for one final game drive before departure.
