August is widely considered the best time to visit the Masai Mara for the Great Migration. The wildebeest herds are at their peak, river crossings are frequent, and predator action is exceptional. The dry season weather is perfect — sunny days, cool nights, and virtually no rain. However, August is also the busiest and most expensive month. Lodge prices are 30% to 50% higher than the green season, and popular camps book out 6 to 12 months in advance. If you prioritise the migration above all else, August is unbeatable. If you prefer lower prices and fewer vehicles, consider September or October, when migration herds are still present but crowds have thinned.

August offers the best chance of witnessing Mara River crossings, but there are no guarantees. Crossings depend on herd movements, weather, and the wildebeest’s unpredictable collective behaviour. On good days, multiple crossings occur. On quiet days, herds gather at the riverbank for hours before retreating. The key is patience and a knowledgeable guide who understands crossing points and herd behaviour. The main crossing points are around Paradise Plain, Main Crossing, and the Mara Serena area. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times. Even without a crossing, the sheer number of animals in the Mara during August is spectacular.

The Masai Mara is at its busiest in August. The reserve’s main roads and popular crossing points can have dozens of vehicles gathered. Around the Mara River, traffic jams of safari vehicles are common during peak crossing activity. However, the Mara is vast — 1,510 square kilometres — and it is possible to escape the crowds. Staying in a private conservancy adjacent to the reserve provides exclusivity, with limited vehicle numbers and off-road driving permitted. camps in the northern or eastern Mara see fewer vehicles than those near the main crossing points. Early morning game drives avoid the midday rush. With good guiding and strategic positioning, you can enjoy incredible wildlife without feeling overwhelmed by other tourists.

August in the Masai Mara is dry and cool. Mornings and evenings can be chilly — temperatures drop to 10 to 15 degrees Celsius before dawn. Daytime temperatures reach 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. Pack layers: a warm fleece or jacket for early morning game drives, lightweight clothing for midday, and a hat and sunglasses for sun protection. Neutral colours (khaki, olive, beige) are recommended for wildlife viewing. Binoculars are essential. For photographers, bring telephoto lenses — 300mm minimum, 500mm or 600mm ideal. A bean bag or tripod is useful for vehicle-based photography. Insect repellent and sunscreen are necessary. Rain is unlikely, but a light waterproof jacket is worth packing.

For an August Masai Mara safari, book 6 to 12 months in advance. The best lodges and camps sell out early, particularly during the peak migration period. Popular properties like Angama Mara, Cottar’s, and Elephant Pepper Camp are often fully booked a year ahead. If you are flexible with dates and accommodation, 3 to 6 months may suffice for mid-range options. Last-minute bookings in August are difficult and expensive.
