Big Five Wildlife Safari Tours was built on a simple belief: the best safari is one where every decision — where you go, where you sleep, how long you stay — is made for you specifically, not for a group of forty strangers on a fixed itinerary. We are an East Africa safari company operating across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda, and everything we do is tailor-made around the person asking.
We have spent years inside these ecosystems. We have driven the Serengeti at dawn when the light turns the grass gold and lions are still finishing the night’s kill. We have trekked through Bwindi in the rain, mud past the ankles, following a silverback’s trail through forest so dense the sky disappears. We know which crossing point on the Mara River fills with wildebeest in August and which is empty. We know that the northern sector of the Serengeti in November is completely underrated and that most visitors miss it entirely. That kind of knowledge does not come from a brochure.
What We Actually Do
We plan and operate private, tailor-made safaris for individuals, couples, families, and small groups. When you contact us, you speak with someone who has been to the parks you are asking about — not a call centre agent reading from a script. We listen to what you want, we push back when we think something won’t work, and we tell you honestly when a park is not worth the detour or when a camp is overpriced for what it offers.
We handle everything: airport transfers, park permits, accommodation, internal flights, gorilla trekking permits, meals, and guides. You arrive. We take care of the rest. And because we work with a small number of clients at a time, we are reachable throughout your trip, not just before it.
The Countries We Know Best
Kenya
Kenya is where most people imagine when they think of an African safari, and for good reason. The Masai Mara’s Great Migration is genuinely one of the most extraordinary wildlife events on the planet, but Kenya is far more than one reserve in one season. Amboseli with Kilimanjaro on the horizon, the red elephants of Tsavo, the Samburu Specials that exist nowhere else — Kenya rewards visitors who go deeper than the obvious.
Tanzania
Tanzania holds more wildlife than any other country in East Africa. The Serengeti is larger than most people realise — about the size of Northern Ireland — and the different zones behave completely differently depending on the time of year. Ngorongoro Crater is the densest concentration of large mammals on earth. Ruaha and Nyerere in the south are remote, uncrowded, and home to the largest African Wild Dog populations remaining anywhere. Tanzania is where serious safari travellers come back to.
Uganda
Uganda is the country that surprises people most. The gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is unlike anything else a safari can offer — an hour sitting with a mountain gorilla family in dense forest, watching them eat, groom, and sleep, with no barrier between you and them. Uganda also has chimpanzees in Kibale, tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth, the Shoebill stork in Mabamba Bay, and Murchison Falls, where the entire Nile is forced through a seven-metre gap in the rock. It is a country that deserves far more visitors than it currently gets.
Rwanda
Rwanda offers gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, golden monkeys in the Virunga foothills, and Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzees and extraordinary canopy walks. It is a smaller country than its neighbours but exceptionally well run, with Kigali consistently ranked among Africa’s cleanest and safest cities. Many visitors combine Rwanda with Uganda — the two countries share the Virunga volcano range and the gorilla population that lives across both.
How We Think About Conservation
The wildlife that makes this business possible is under pressure from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and the slow erosion of the wild spaces that remain. We take that seriously. We work with camps and lodges that put conservation fees back into the ecosystems they operate inside, and we support community tourism initiatives that give the people living beside these parks a reason to protect them. A gorilla is worth more alive to a local community than dead to a poacher — but only if tourism is structured in a way that ensures local people actually benefit. We try to make sure our bookings work that way.
