East Africa covers a vast stretch of the continent, from the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya and Tanzania to the mountain forests of Uganda and Rwanda on the edge of Central Africa. Within that geography sit some of the most significant wildlife habitats remaining anywhere on earth — the Serengeti ecosystem, the Masai Mara, the Albertine Rift, the forests of Bwindi, and the volcanic slopes of the Virunga range. Choosing where to go depends on what you want to see, how long you have, and what kind of experience you are looking for.
Each of our four main destination countries has a distinct character. Kenya is the classic East African safari — open savannah, the Great Migration, the Masai Mara. Tanzania holds the continent’s largest and least-crowded wildlife areas, from the Serengeti to the remote southern circuit. Uganda is where the forest meets the savannah — gorilla trekking in Bwindi, chimpanzees in Kibale, the Nile at Murchison Falls. Rwanda is small, immaculately managed, and home to its own mountain gorilla population in Volcanoes National Park.
