Lake Naivasha — Hippos, Boats, and Hell’s Gate
Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in the floor of the Great Rift Valley, about ninety minutes northwest of Nairobi at an altitude of 1,884 metres. It is not a national park — the lake and its shores are managed as a Ramsar wetland and national park boundary — but it offers a genuinely rewarding wildlife experience of a different character from the classic game-drive parks. The setting is beautiful: papyrus-fringed shores, yellow fever trees, fish eagles calling from dead branches over the water, and a ring of escarpment rising steeply on the Rift Valley walls beyond. The wildlife here is intimate rather than vast — hippos at close range from a small boat, colobus monkeys in the trees along Crescent Island, a giraffe walking along the shoreline at dusk.
Boat Trips and the Hippos
A boat trip on Lake Naivasha is the central activity and one of the most relaxed wildlife experiences in Kenya. The boats are small and quiet, and the hippos — which number in the hundreds on the lake — are accustomed to them. You can approach to within a few metres. The hippos spend their days largely in the water, surfacing to breathe and occasionally hauling out onto the shore. In the late afternoon and evening, as the lake cools, they emerge to graze on land. The water birds are exceptional: African fish eagle, goliath heron, kingfishers, jacana walking on lily pads, and a variety of waders and water birds that make Naivasha a very good birding lake.
Crescent Island and the Walking Safari
Crescent Island is a small peninsula on the eastern side of the lake — technically an island in the wet season — and it is one of the few places in Kenya where you can walk among ungulates without a guide or ranger requirement. Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala, and waterbuck roam freely on the island, and walking among them at close range is a distinctly different experience from watching them from a vehicle. It is particularly good with children who have never been within arm’s reach of a giraffe.
Hell’s Gate — Cycling Between Gorillas and Lions
Hell’s Gate National Park borders Lake Naivasha and offers something completely unique in Kenya: a national park where you can walk or cycle freely without a guide among zebras, buffalo, giraffe, and warthog. The landscape is dramatic — deep volcanic gorges, geothermal steam vents, and towering rock columns that inspired the scenery of the animated film The Lion King. There are no lions or elephants in Hell’s Gate, which is what makes the self-guided experience possible, but the walking and cycling experience in the gorge, combined with the proximity of the lake’s boat trips, makes Naivasha a satisfying two-night stop on any Kenya circuit.
