Honeymoon Safari in East Africa: Romantic Camps, Experiences and Beach Finishes

A safari is one of the most memorable ways to begin married life. Days spent watching wildlife together, evenings by a fire under an enormous sky, and a few days on a tropical beach to finish: East Africa has everything a honeymoon needs, and it is easy to tailor the trip to your style, whether you dream of luxury, adventure or both.

What makes a safari romantic

• Small camps: intimate tented camps with only a handful of tents, where you feel alone in the wilderness.
• Private moments: bush dinners by lantern light, sundowners on a hilltop, star beds on a raised platform under the open sky.
• A private vehicle and guide: your own pace, your own sightings, and no strangers in the back seats.
• Special experiences: a hot-air balloon flight at sunrise over the Serengeti or the Masai Mara, followed by a champagne breakfast.

Where to go

Kenya: the Masai Mara conservancies combine superb wildlife with small, stylish camps. Add a few nights in Laikipia for walking, horse riding and rhinos, and finish on the beach at Diani or Lamu.

Tanzania: the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater offer the classic safari, and Zanzibar, a short flight away, is one of Africa’s favourite honeymoon islands, with white beaches, warm sea and the historic streets of Stone Town.

Uganda and Rwanda: for adventurous couples, a gorilla trek is an unforgettable shared experience. Rwanda has some exceptional luxury lodges near Volcanoes National Park, and the trip combines well with a savanna safari.

When to go

The dry seasons, from June to October and from late December to February, are the most reliable. If your wedding falls in April or May, consider the rainy-season specials and quieter camps, or plan a trip focused on the beach and the gorillas, which are less affected by the rains.

How long?

Ten to fourteen days is ideal: around a week on safari in two or three areas, then four or five days on the beach. Avoid moving every night; two or three nights in each camp lets you relax and settle in.

Budget

Honeymoon safaris tend to be at mid-range or luxury level. Many camps offer honeymoon touches, such as a special dinner or a bottle of champagne, and some give reduced rates to the second guest when you show your marriage certificate. Read our safari cost guide for typical prices.

Planning tips

• Book early, especially for July to September and the Christmas period, when the most romantic camps fill up.
• Tell your camps you are on honeymoon; they love to make it special.
• Pack light for small planes: usually 15 kilograms per person in a soft bag.
